Child and Adolescent Outpatient Services

Our Child and Adolescent Outpatient Unit provides services for children, adolescents and families. We use evidence based, effective treatment approaches to help children overcome problems.   Youth (ages 3 to 17 years) and young adults (ages 18 to 21 years) are referred for social, academic, behavioral, emotional and family difficulties.  We provide psychiatric and clinical evaluations and medication management, individual, family, and group psychotherapy.   Our specialty programs and areas of service include: Early Childhood Intervention, Sexual Abuse, LGBTQ, Gender Identify, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Social Skill Building, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Juvenile Sexual Offenders, Substance Abuse Services and many other programs.  We are a a state of the art clinic with an extremely talented multi disciplinary staff.   

Our Child Services Include: 

Psychiatric Evaluation and Treatment: Board Certified psychiatrists provide comprehensive evaluations and psychopharmacological treatment.  Evaluations are conducted to formulate treatment plans and to assess the benefits of medication and follow-up.

Clinical Intake Evaluation:  We provide thorough clinical bio psychosocial evaluation services.  We assess youth and families to effectively pinpoint clinical needs, diagnosis and treatment recommendations.    

Group Therapy:   Our extensive group psychotherapy services helps children with a wide variety of difficulties.  Children and adolescents are able to share their experiences and learn that they are not alone in their struggles, anxiety and problems.  Our specialized groups include: Social Skills, Anger Management, Depression/Anxiety, Teen Challenges, Separation and Loss, Divorce and Parenting Skill-Building.  

Individual Therapy:  We offer short-term, solution-focused therapy to assist children and adolescents build the skills they need to overcome their problems.

Family Therapy:   We provide family therapy to improve parent and guardian effectiveness and the support network of the children we serve.  Our systems approach brings together the individuals most involved in a child’s life to improve communication and to build effective problem solving skills.

How to Make a Referral

Referrals are accepted from parents, pediatricians, school personnel, legal guardians, DCPP Department of Children Protection and Permanency Planning, Perform Care, Courts and other Social Service agencies.

Our services are available in English and Spanish. We accept Medicaid, most private insurance companies and Charity Care is offered for the uninsured.

Specialized Child Outpatient Programs

Child Sexual Abuse Program

In collaboration with the Union County Child Advocacy Center, Trinitas provides off-site clinicians who conduct screening and linkage to appropriate services.  Follow up may include individual, family and group therapy at the Trinitas outpatient clinic.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

We provide evidence-based trauma treatment and services to children, adolescents and their families who experience and/or witness traumatic events. Utilizing interventions developed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) and the CARES Institute/Rowan University, we work with trauma-impacted families offering brief, focused, short-term psychotherapeutic intervention in individual and group formats to reduce the incidence, severity, and duration of acute stress and PTSD conditions.

Juvenile Sexual Offender Program and Early Intervention for Youth with Sexual Behaviors

The JSO Program provides treatment for the juvenile sex offender and their family. Services include sex offender specific assessments and treatment, including psychiatric evaluation and specialized individual, family and group psychotherapy. When needed interventions are coordinated in concert with Probation and Parole services.  Younger children with inappropriate touching, poor boundaries, or other sexual behaviors, who have not been court-involved, are offered individual, family and group therapy in accordance with our evidence based treatment program.

Adolescent Substance Abuse Services

We provide services for substance abusing youth referred by their families, schools or pediatricians. Our evidence based treatment services include: development of positive coping skills, identification of relapse triggers, 12-step philosophy education, individual and family therapy, relapse prevention, ongoing monitoring and random drug screening.

Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder Program

We offer 12 week cycles of ADHD Group Therapy along with Parent Support / Education Groups to teach children and their parents the skills for overcoming the problems associated with ADHD.   Skill building areas include body / impulse control, anger management, listening, following directions, focusing, improving memory, relaxation, self calming, communication and time management. Psychiatric evaluations and medication management services are offered as needed. We also conduct Social Skills training groups for ADHD children and adolescents all year round.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program

Through a supportive and validating therapeutic environment, we provide our DBT intensive evidence-based psychotherapy program for adolescents and young adults (ages 12-18) who exhibit difficulty regulating their emotions and behavior. DBT program goals include decreasing suicidal, cutting and self injurious and other problematic behaviors (e.g., binge eating / purging, substance abuse, school truancy, aggression...). Multi-Family Skills Group, Individual and Family Treatment and Telephone Coaching are included in our DBT treatment approach. For more information click www.dbtnj.org.
